چکیده

Almost everyone in the industrialized world uses video compression many times each day. Whether you’re watching Oprah on TV, funny clips on YouTube, Disney on DVD or homemade movies of your family, all video storage and delivery mechanisms rely heavily on compression technology. As early as 1929, Ray Davis Kell described a form of video compression and was granted a patent for it. He wrote, “It has been customary in the past to transmit successive complete images of the transmitted picture. [...] In accordance with this invention, this difficulty is avoided by transmitting only the difference between successive images of the object.” Although it would be many years before this technique would actually be used in practice, it is still a cornerstone of many video compression standards today. We’ll take a trip down memory lane in this article, describing video compression standards over the years, after a brief introduction to television signals in general. We’ll describe the challenges in designing video subsystems that support these video standards and conclude with a description of the ARC Video 401 Subsystem, highlighting how it addresses the challenging video market demands.

Fast Intra Mode Decision for Depth Map coding in 3D-HEVC Standard

three dimensional- high efficiency video coding (3D-HEVC) is the expanded version of the latest video compression standard, namely high efficiency video coding (HEVC), which is used to compress 3D videos. 3D videos include texture video and depth map. Since the statistical characteristics of depth maps are different from those of texture videos, new tools have been added to the HEVC standard fo...

A Method to Reduce Effects of Packet Loss in Video Streaming Using Multiple Description Coding

Multiple description (MD) coding has evolved as a promising technique for promoting error resiliency of multimedia system in real-time application programs over error-prone communicational channels. Although multiple description lattice vector quantization (MDCLVQ) is an efficient method for transmitting reliable data in the context of potential error channels, this method doesn’t consider disc...

Adaptive Spectral Separation Two Layer Coding with Error Concealment for Cell Loss Resilience

This paper addresses the issue of cell loss and its consequent effect on video quality in a packet video system, and examines possible compensative measures. In the system's enconder, adaptive spectral separation is used to develop a two-layer coding scheme comprising a high priority layer to carry essential video data and a low priority layer with data to enhance the video image. A two-step er...

Compressed Domain Scene Change Detection Based on Transform Units Distribution in High Efficiency Video Coding Standard

Scene change detection plays an important role in a number of video applications, including video indexing, searching, browsing, semantic features extraction, and, in general, pre-processing and post-processing operations. Several scene change detection methods have been proposed in different coding standards. Most of them use fixed thresholds for the similarity metrics to determine if there wa...

First Use of a Brief 60-second Mindfulness Exercise in an Orthopedic Surgical Practice; Results from a Pilot Study

Background: Mindfulness based interventions may be useful for patients with musculoskeletal conditions in orthopedic surgical practices as adjuncts to medical procedures or alternatives to pain medications. However, typical mindfulness programs are lengthy and impractical in busy surgical practices. We tested the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effect of a brief, 60-second mindfulnes...

Recognition of Visual Events using Spatio-Temporal Information of the Video Signal

Recognition of visual events as a video analysis task has become popular in machine learning community. While the traditional approaches for detection of video events have been used for a long time, the recently evolved deep learning based methods have revolutionized this area. They have enabled event recognition systems to achieve detection rates which were not reachable by traditional approac...
